After a brief period of hibernation, Shashi Tharoor is back with a bang. On Friday Tharoor made an appearance in the Capital at a book release function. And on Saturday the former minister of state for external affairs and Congress MP was back on Twitter. This time, he advised the South Block that India should also do its best to protect its interest the way US and Pakistan were doing.
His one-liner posted on the micro-blogging website said it all: “If the US and Pakistan are doing what is in their interests, that doesn’t stop India from doing what is in its interest?”
It was clear from Tharoor’s cryptic comment that he was unhappy with the country’s handling of talks with Pakistan at Islamabad between external affairs minister S M Krishna and his Pakistani counter-part.
Tharoor’s comment is bound to ruffle feathers in the government and the Congress as he is the first Congress MP to make an adverse remark after the controversy involving G K Pillai, SM Krishna and S M Qureshi. The government and sparring ministers are working hard to put up a bold face on the eve of Parliament’s Monsoon session.
But Tharoor’s advisory to South Block will certainly cause unease.
Earlier on Friday, Tharoor made an appearance for the release of a book based on the historical tale of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s reign. However, his close friend Sunanda Pushkar was not by his side.
