The Allahabad high court judgment has given another opportunity to the Centre to take steps for a “negotiated settlement” of the vexed Ayodhya dispute in the three months the three-judge bench has given.
The restrained response of Sangh Parivar and Muslims coupled with countrywide peace in the aftermath of the verdict has certainly created the right atmosphere for its amicable implementation.
The core issue before the ruling Congress and thegovernment is whether UPA will take the initiative to invite the groups concerned, ask them to accept the verdict and find ways to implement it.
The Congress core committee refrained from reacting to the verdict, except for welcoming it, but law minister M Veerappa Moily said it all without saying much. “We are studying the judgment,” he said.
The issue is who will invite the quarrelling parties to the negotiating table and plead with them that no purpose will be served by going to the Supreme Court after the three months.
The core committee did not take a view on Thursday whether the government should invite various religious groups, but it is learnt that Union home minister P Chidambaram is all for a government initiative on the issue.
